Washington, D.C.
1912
The last of the 48.
On February 14, 1912, President Taft signed the proclamation that made Arizona the 48th state, the last of the contiguous states to join.
…the admission of the State into the Union on an equal footing with the other States is now complete.
How Arizona got its star
-
1863–1911
A long wait
Arizona spent 49 years as a territory. In August 1911 Taft vetoed statehood over one clause: voters could recall judges.
-
1912
Arizona's answer
Arizona took the clause out and got its statehood on Valentine's Day. That November, its voters put the recall of judges back in.
-
1912–1959
Forty-eight stars
With Arizona in, the flag went to 48 stars on July 4, 1912. That flag flew for 47 years, through both World Wars and Korea.
-
The desert
Built for the desert
A saguaro can live 150 years or more and may wait 50 years or longer to grow its first arm. Out here, things are built to last.
-
Today
Your state, in steel
Born in the 48th state or chose it, this is its flag, its river and its desert, cut into steel for the shelf.

The outline and the flag
The state's shape, filled with its flag: 13 rays for the colonies and a copper star.
-
The river
The Colorado River, running down the western edge, where it forms much of the border.
-
Canyon and high country
The Grand Canyon across the top, and pines along a line of cliffs. Arizona isn't all desert.
-
BUILT FOR THE DESERT
