9MM Shall Not Be Infringed engraved .50 cal ammo can with flag and topographic background

    New York

    1789

    Four words that never changed.

On June 8, 1789, James Madison rose in the House and proposed: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

…the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Second Amendment, Constitution of the United States (“Article the fourth” as proposed) · Proposed September 25, 1789; ratified December 15, 1791

How four words made it through

    1. 1789

      June 8

      Madison's draft

Madison put the right first and the militia second. Draft after draft that summer, the wording moved. The last four words stayed.

    2. 1789

      Sept 9

      The Senate's pen

The Senate changed “the best security” to “necessary to the security.” A motion to add “for the common defence” after “bear arms” was voted down.

    3. 1789–1791

      Article the fourth

Congress sent twelve amendments to the states on September 25, 1789. The arms article was fourth. On December 15, 1791, Virginia's vote made ten of them law. It became the Second.

    4. 2008

      June 26

      The Court reads it

In District of Columbia v. Heller, the Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to keep and bear arms.

      Today

      Twenty-seven words

Not one changed since 1791. The last four are cut into the side of the can you keep your 9mm in.

    Read the can

Every mark on it was chosen. Here's what you're looking at.

Front of the Shall Not Be Infringed 9mm engraved ammo can: stencil 9MM with the flag through the letters, SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED, over topo lines
    1. 9MM

Big stencil-cut 9MM, with the Stars and Stripes waving through the letters.

    2. Stars in the 9

A few stars set into the bowl of the 9.

    3. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED

The Second Amendment's last four words, in military stencil.

    4. Topo lines

Contour lines like a land-nav map, covering the whole panel: the ground itself, line by line.
