Grand Canyon, Arizona Territory
1903
Leave it as it is.
On May 6, 1903, Theodore Roosevelt stood at the Grand Canyon and told the crowd to leave it exactly as it was.
Leave it as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on it, and man can only mar it.
How the canyon was kept
-
1869
Down the river
John Wesley Powell, a Union veteran who lost part of his right arm at Shiloh, led the first recorded trip down the Colorado through the canyon. Six men made it out.
-
1908–1919
Kept for good
Roosevelt made the canyon a national monument on January 11, 1908. Congress made it a national park, signed into law February 26, 1919.
-
1910–1917
Born at a rifle match
At the 1910 National Matches at Camp Perry, Arizona's Guard rifle team was the only one without a flag. Col. Charles W. Harris designed one. In 1917 it became the state flag.
-
Today
Still as it was
277 river miles long, a mile deep, still left as it is. Some things you don't improve on. You keep them where you can see them.
Read the can
Every mark on it was chosen. Here's what you're looking at.
-
The eagle
Wings spread wide over the canyon, talons forward, coming in low.
-
Rays and star
From Arizona's flag: rays for the original 13 colonies, a copper star for the state's copper.
-
The canyon
Stepped rock walls, with the Colorado River winding along the bottom.
-
Saguaros
One on each side. They grow wild only in the Sonoran Desert.
