1789
Four words that never changed
Congress reworked the Second Amendment draft after draft that summer. Those four words were in Madison's first draft and in every version after it.
Sept 9, 1789
The Senate said no
Asked to add “for the common defence” after “to keep and bear arms,” the Senate voted the change down.
“shall not be infringed”

1901
Luger makes the 9mm
Georg Luger opened up the neck of his 7.65 case and trimmed it to 19mm. DWM sold it as “Parabellum,” from si vis pacem, para bellum: if you want peace, prepare for war.
9×19mm
9mm Luger, 9mm Parabellum, 9×19: one round, three names. It's the one in your can.
U.S. Patent 753,414. The drawing on the Parabellum can. -
1904
America had it first
The U.S. Army had 9mm Lugers in hand months before Germany's Navy adopted the round. That same year Luger's patent was granted.
50
new 9mm Lugers delivered to the U.S. Army in April 1904. Serial numbers 22401 to 22450.
That 1904 patent drawing, cut into the steel of a Parabellum can. -
1907
The .45 Luger
Luger came to Springfield himself with pistols rebuilt for .45. The Army chose the Colt.
1942
The steel can
The Army adopted the steel M2 ammo box in September 1942. A gasketed lid seals out water when latched. Ours are the real thing: military surplus.
1985
9mm goes standard
The U.S. military adopted 9mm as its standard sidearm round. By 2019, more than half of the pistols made in America were 9mm.

P.S. In 2010, the one surviving .45 Luger from the 1907 Army trials sold for $494,500. Yours is a lot less: real military-surplus steel, a design no one else sells, and Winchester 9mm to fill it.
